I’m not telling you its going to be easy- I’m telling you its going to be worth it.-Art Williams
If golf was easy, would we value the game as much?
Imagine a world where golf came easy? If we could just pick up a driver and stripe it 300 yd down the middle, if we could take that perfect dollar bill divot on our approach shot to stick it 3 ft from the hole and tap in for birdie on every hole. What if we were able to do that without putting in countless hours on the range, stand over 1000 3-foot putts on the practice green or dialing in your wedge shots.
Would you have the same infatuation for golf as you do now?
I would like to argue that you wouldn’t. I believe that the reason we love the game so much is because of how difficult it is. The reason we admire and respect good golfers is because we all understand the skill and commitment it takes to be proficient at the game. And the great joy and pride we feel when having a good round or shot is directly related to the level of difficulty of the game.
I truly believe that is the reason why golf is the best game ever played as well as the closest correlation to life. Humans are programmed to value what they must work for, not what is easy or given to them.
If it was so easy to make a solid shot, everyone would be doing it and no one would value it, and what a shame that would be to not value the greatest game ever made.
This relates to life just the same. Life isn’t easy, in fact, it’s a grind! Launching a business is hard, despite what it looks like on the outside. Relationships are difficult, even when its easy its hard!
But would I trade it for the world? Absolutely not. Because the feeling of fulfillment that we get when we accomplish the goal is irreplaceable. The rush of dopamine and serotonin we feel is priceless. The surge of pride and satisfaction is worth every single moment of pain, sadness and confusion. That is the reason why life is hard, because it allows us to truly bask in the glory of our accomplishment when we achieve it.
So the next time, anything gets you down, just remember that it will all be worth it in the end. Future you will thank you. Bring it on.
