Emotional Trash Bag

These mountains that you are carrying, you were only supposed to climb.

-Najwa Zebian

I have a scenario for you:

It’s been months since you’ve been on the course. It’s been a hectic few months with work but you’ve been itching to get back on the course.

Your buddies haven’t waited around for you, they’ve continued practicing and playing. Finally, the day has come where you can join them for a round. A day of pure bliss, you, your best friends, the golf course and a couple of beers. What could go wrong?

You bring three clubs to the range for warm up, your favorite clubs; Pitching Wedge, Eight Iron and Driver. You figure that you can start warming up with your PW. You take a few warm up practice swings. Hm… Feels good.

What on earth was that? You’re shocked because you never hit nozzle shots!

Is it my swing? Is my path coming too outside to inside which is causing me to shank the ball?

You slightly alter the swing path and try again.

You go through the rest of the range balls and hit them decent, after all you’re just a bit rusty.

After warmup, you pick up your bag and head to the first tee. As you arrive at the first tee, you realize that you’re out of breath because your bag is so heavy. As you put down your bag, you see that there is a enormous trash bag attached. Confused, you empty the bag onto the ground to find different sized boulders with words engraved on each.

“The first shank at the range.”

“The duck hook at the range.”

“How everyone else is going to play.”

“What are people going to think about my game?”

“What if I duck hook it into the water on my tee shot?”

“There are people on the practice green behind the first tee. What are they going to think if I hit a bad shot?

“I couldn’t even hit good shots with a perfect lie at the range. What if I get a not so perfect lie on course?”

Why the hell are those doing there, just weighing you down for no good reason?!

Disgusted, you stand up and feel as if weight has been lifted from your shoulders, literally. You are now free to proceed without your emotional baggage.
